Can't Get Java to work

I have IE 6 on XP Professional and I can't get it to work on sites with java
applets. I have it set to minimal on security and have made sure java is
enabled.

WinXP does not come with Java.

Understand that because of a court decision Microsoft is stopping all Java
support, including security updates, in January.
