Can't get into Safe Mode

I don't use Windows so much these days having migrated to Linux on my
home computer.
However, I'm away from home right now and using a home-made small
desktop with only WindowsXP Pro installed.
Problem is, I can't find how to get into Safe Mode.
On booting, the first readable screen that appears offers three
alternative boot options:

1) Del key is for SetUp which leads to the BIOS screen
2) F8 is for the boot screen which allows to select the preferred boot
device (for this one time only). After selection, it just goes ahead
and boots to normal mode.
3) F12 is for a network boot

.................but no mention of Safe Mode in any of them.

Can anybody help me figure out how to get into Safe Mode on this
machine.
Thanks
Paul

Should be available when you use the F8 key during boot up. You can setup
the boot type from within Windows by using the msconfig command. Execute if
from the Start/ Run menu.

I used the msconfig to activate a safeboot and that allowed me to do
what I needed in Safe Mode.
However, I'm still unclear as to why F8 did not give me the option to
boot into Safe Mode as was always the case in other WindowsXP
computers I have used.
Is there something I need to do in SetUp to activate this option?
Best wishes

It could be a matter of timing on F8, or try F5 or F6 ( I don't remember
which but I have seem posting by some folks with certain brand computers
that they needed to use one of those to get safe mode).
