Can't get Excel from Office '97 to work in Winows ME

I tried loading Excel and Word from my Office '97 CD. The load appeared to be successful, but when I try to run either one I get a message saying it is not compatible with my operating system (Windows Millinium Edition). Do I need to install special drivers, and if so then which ones and where can I get them? Thanks for any help you can provide.
 
Uninstall from Add/remove programs
Turn off AV, Screensaver, all programs except Explorer and systray
Install Office
Reboot

Office 97 is completely compatable with ME --as a matter of fact is is
compatable with XP so you should not be needing anything addtional
