Can't get deleted items to delete

When I try to delete the dleted items, it won't. An error
message comes up and sayas, "Errors have been detected in
the file _blah, blah_,quit all mail-enabled applications
and use the Inbox Repair Tool." I've tried but can't get
it to work. Any ideas?

Create a new PST and make it your default delivery location. Copy over to
it all but the Deleted Items folder from your old PST. Close the old PST.
All done.
