Can't get access to my external harddrive

Any help really appreciated with this, as the drive contains important family pictures that are irreplaceable.

Have you tried the drive in any other computers ?

Yes, I've tried it in two other computers (win7 and vista) with the same result.

I've heard that xp might work for some reason, but I think I'm grasping at straws

The link is not working. Depending on what version of Windows 7 you have you might be able to use XP mode. Or you could use one of the many Linux Live distro's and see if you are able to see the contents of your drive then.

I've tried Ubuntu but no joy there either. The drive shows up, but says it can't read the files.

By XP, I mean installing XP on my old laptop and using that. Someone reckoned XP would work for some reason.

Did you try to read the files as "root" ??????

I had this problem with two of my hard drives, I have just reinstalled W 7 and now they both show and are usable. Are sure that it is not the OS not recognizing them as there is damage to the OS.I use them both in a caddy for backing up.

Did you try to read the files as "root" ??????

There was a 'root' folder, but it said I didn't have permission to access it. Didn't know where to go from there. Any suggestions?
