When I bootup my laptop it says:

"unable to find hal.dll"

My idea was to install and repair the installation via
my WindowsXP-Installation CD, but after having clicked
on the install windows option, the typical repair option isn't there.

Then I tried to use recovery console but strangely
it doen't find windows beeing installed on the pc
so I can't access the hard disk( I can type "DIR" and get directory listing
but cannot write to it.)

Anyone has an idea how to procceed?

Run a harddrive diagnostic
and a RAM test

you may have a hardware problem

You may want to put the drive into another machine and backup your data
before going
any farther

I ran chkdsk /r and /p on recovery console.

It says there are errors on harddrive which can't be corrected.

I also tried fixmbr - it says that the mbr isn't correct but I would risk to
loose hard disk data if I procceed.

So there seem to be physical errors on the drive.

What can I do about it?

As I said previously...put the drive in another machine and at least
retrieve your data.
the harddrive is probably bad.
you can go to the website of the harddrive's manufacturer and get their
diagnostic utility to confirm

but NOTE: Back up your data first. (you may need to take ownership of some
files if they turn up as inaccessible)

Hal.dll (Dynamic Link Library) is a System32 file. If you can access your PC
in Safe Mode or access the Command Prompt, type the following:
SFC /SCANNOW and press OK. This will activate the System File Checker
and replace corrupt or missing system files. There is a space between
the C and /. Have your WindowsXP CD handy for it may ask for it.
