Can't find files even though "Show hidden files & folders"

(Note: this sounds like a Symantec / Norton AntiVirus question but isn't
really, it only starts that way - please bear with me)

The past few times I've run NAV, it's detected 2 but
repaired/quarantined/deleted/excluded 0, claiming that "Additional non-viral
threats remain". These are
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\HDPlugin1018.dll and
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\PdpPlugin5094.dll (threat-name =
Adware.Gator)

My Q: Windows Explorer doesn't show them there! In fact, for
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files, it lists 17 items yet Properties says
there are 41 files.
Why can't I see them ? How can i get at them (e.g. to delete those two
DLL's) ? My folder options already say "Show hidden files & folders".

It's my contention that that folder is super hidden. I've mentioned
this is posts before, but it didn't draw much discussion.

Look at it with the command prompt:
Open a CMD box
type CD \
type CD "\windows\downloaded program files"
type DIR /p

Here's another approach you can take:
Open the Downloaded Program Files folder.
Right click on each of the ActiveX icons and select Properties
from the drop down menu.
Click on the Dependency tab.
If you see the files you're trying to delete listed then you
should go back and select Remove from the drop down menu that's
displayed when you right click on the icon.
If you're not sure about this post back with the names of the
items you think you should remove.

Hi Dave, that's great (good old DOS, eh!?)
I found them in DOS and moved them out for a while - to see if everything
falls apart without them!
The files were: HDPlugin1018.dll 70KB and HDPlugin1018.inf 800B both dated
13may04 17:49 and also PdpPlugin5094.dll 238KB dated 7july03 12:48
I don's suppose you've ever heard of them? or know what they do ?
I'm just following Norton's advice that they're bad - I don't know why NAV
couldn't get rid of them ?

I right-clicked on every item I could see and checked the Dependency tab but
the bad files were not listed for any of them.
Bad files being : C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\HDPlugin1018.dll
and C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\PdpPlugin5094.dll
I found them in a DOS CMD prompt window (as in Dave's advice) and moved
them elsewhere to see if anything bad happens. Hopefully, I can delete them
later.

in Folder Options | View, you need to 1) select "Show Hidden Files and
FOlders", and 2) UNCHECK "Hide protected operating system files
(recommended)". Then you can see "super hidden" files.

you might want to try a root kit revealer program:

just to be sure that is not the reason you can't see the files.

Hmm, i always feel a little anxious about going against the "recommended"
options but I can give it a whirl when i next have a problem.
Um, what does a root kit revealer do ? Sounds like it shows absolutely
everything from the root down (up?) - if so, wouldn't that might be a bit

If you wish to see hidden files and folders: Start/Control Panel/Folder
Options/"View" tab/First,check mark "Show hidden files and
folders"/second, remove check mark from "Hide protected operating system
files (Recommended)".
