Can't find 31GB file resolution

I'm not quite sure of the protocol for this post so pardon me if I'm
off base.

I had shift+deleted a 31GB file from my desktop. For some reason, the
icon for the file disappeared but the HDD space was still being used.
I tried many ways to find the "missing" file and quite a few folks
offered suggestions, but to no avail. Finally, I bought a DVD writer
to back up my data in case a reformat was the only solution.
I installed the writer and backed up about three GB of image and
music files and shift+deleted them. When I checked My Computer to see
how much space I'd saved, ALL my HDD space was back. The files were
deleted from directories entirely separate from the desktop, from
which the big file had been deleted. I have no idea how or why this
happened. If you do I'd love to hear it.
