Deleted large file problem update. Weird.

A while back I asked for help when I shift/deleted a 31GB file and
though the file's icon disappeared, the space was not freed up on my
harddrive. Though I got several good suggestions, I never was able to
get the HDD space back by following any of them. After a while, I
found that the space was back, but I didn't know why.

The problem has recurred a couple of times now, both with large files
and once when I shift/deleted a folder containing about 1.7GB of MP3
files. I've now found that my HDD space is restored when I uninstall
ANY program via Add/Remove programs. That is, I get back the space
from the deleted file(s) plus the space freed up by the uninstall.
Does this make any sense?

Thinking about it, the problem of not restoring HDD space may exist
when I delete any size files, but only be noticeable when I delete
large files. I'll test for that.

Thanks for any input.

Empty the recycle bin even if the file was too large to put there. That
triggers recovery of disk space. If you are using Norton, then also empty
the Protected Recycle Bin.

Thanks.

I did empty the recycle bin to no effect, but I am using Norton and
did not empty the protected bin. I'll try that if it happens again.

I am betting you are using Norton, which adds it's own protection to the
recycle bin - a last chance, if you will, to recover your files. You must
empty this area of the recycle bin also to free up the space.
