Can't enter text in forms

For some reason, I can't type any text into form in IE,
e.g. the search box at Google or Amazon (XP Pro, IE 6).
Has anyone else seen this?

I don't have access to an IE install disk (not many of us
use CDs to install IE anymore!) and the KB article only
refers to IE5.
