Can't End Process to fix Norton LiveUpdate

(Sorry to duplicate post, but wasn't sure which forum would be best).

Hi All,
I am having a problem with my Norton AntiVirus LiveUpdate. To fix this
problem, I am supposed to terminate the process "LUCOMS~1.EXE". I am unable
to do this, and since this seems to be a problem in Task Manager, I am
guessing it is a Windows issue...?

What happens: In Task Manager I select the above process, hit "End Process",
and get the Warning box ("Are you sure you want to end this process?"). When
I click "Yes", it returns me to the same Task Manager screen, with the LUCOMS
process still listed. This just keeps happening. If I close and reopen Task
Manager, it's also still there.

I Re-started the computer; no LUCOMS process until I tried again to run
LiveUpdate (which now hangs in "initializing"). Before I proceed with any
Symantec support (hanging in initializing), I'm guessing I'll need to fix the
problem with ending the process LUCOMS. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Try re-installing LiveUpdate. You can download it here:

ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/liveupdate/lusetup.exe

Thanks. Ran into the same problem with "End Process" with the 2nd tech
person, but we seemed to resolve the overall problem when, I'm guessing, s/he
had me do just that (gave me a link that had me Run something).

I am still wondering, though, why I couldn't end the process as instructed,
and also, is there anything I need to remove? Should I de-frag or something,
now?

Is there anything that you should remove?.. is there ever?..

Start by uninstalling Norton AV.. then Live Update and Live Reg..

Having cleaned your system of all things Norton, do a search in IE6 for 'AVG
free', download and run it..

I am not joking, btw..

I've never had any (major) problems with Norton and I've been using it
since the DOS days, oh around v4 or so. Little niggles, yes but nothing
you don't get with any other software.

Hahahaha.. I prefer NOT to use or advocate use of Norton Anything, and
prefer top posting.. we appear to stand in different camps on both issues..

I can understand you don't like Norton (everyone is entitled to their
opinion) but I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would
*prefer* top posting. I know that some people are too lazy to trim and
snip so that is why they do it, but to actually *prefer* it puzzles me.

Oh well I'm getting off topic (not unusual for me..!) so I'll shut up now.
