Can't enable DMA

David

I can't enable DMA on my primary IDE channel

When I go to the device manager, expand ATA/ATAPI controllers , then
highlight Primary IDE and right click and select properties, there is
no advanced tab there.

Thats where I should go to enable DMA right?

On my primary IDE there are two fairly modern Seagate 80G drives as a
master and secondary. Nothing on the Secndary IDE. Pentium 4 at
2.4GHz and Windows XP Professional.

What am I doing wrong????

You're looking in the right place for DMA.

[[(Note: You will not see the Advanced Settings section if your hardware
does not support it)]]

[[4. In the Primary/Secondary IDE Channel Properties window, select the
Advanced Settings tab (if the Properties window does not have an Advanced
Settings tab, see the Note at the end).
Note: With some IDE drivers/Busmastering drivers, DMA cannot be enabled
through the device manager, but only through the driver settings. An example
of this is the Intel Application Accelerator.]]

May also need to update the drivers.

[[For repeated DMA errors. Windows XP will turn off DMA mode for a device
after encountering certain errors during data transfer operations. If more
that six DMA transfer timeouts occur, Windows will turn off DMA and use only
PIO mode on that device.
In this case, the user cannot turn on DMA for this device. The only option
for the user who wants to enable DMA mode is to uninstall and reinstall the
device.]]

Thanks Wes for your reply.

I'm still stuck. I just tried a new IDE cable rated at UDMA133/100 and
checked the Seagate website and made sure my ST38021A 80Gig hard drive
was DMA compatible. The new cable didn't help.

Should I try a Windows XP reinstall?

David,

I don't believe reinstalling XP will solve this.

Try posting @

You might give a little more info there.

I did a bunch of searches @ http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/ for
ST38021A and got:

David,

ST380021A Barracuda ATA IV

Well, it supports DMA.

ATA data-transfer modes supported:
PIO modes 0–4
Multiword DMA modes 0–2

Hi David

First off, drivers might need to be updated, so check if there are new
drivers available for your IDE controller.

Second, connecting two HD on the primary IDE channel and not using the
second channel can result in data loss on the master drive if the slave
drive fails or vice versa. Also you will get better performance on both HD
if they are connected to seperate IDE channels.
