Can't eliminate type conversion errors

I have an Excel file containing some columns which contain a mix of numeric
on some rows and alfa characters on others. When importing it looks like
Access is determining the data type upon the first few rows which are
imported. In this case I am getting import errors for the rows containing
alfa characters. I have tried formating the Excel columns as text and also
tried creating an empty table with the column's data type as text and memo.
It doesn't make a difference as the alfa character rows are rejected. Can
someone help?

Try add a phony first row of data using that which the field should be.
