Sometimes when downloading instead of getting a dialogue, I get a little box
in the upper lefthand corner and my download ends. How can I fix this?

If it is only .exe files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.
Netscape-Style Plug-ins Do Not Work After Upgrading Internet Explorer
[Q303401]
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303401

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
The key does not normally exist.

.
Did you find out what to do about this problem? I too
have the exact same problem

Why not use the same answer?

I have the same problem too - I talked with Microsoft and
they were not able to tell me something to do. I first
had it with IE6.0 running WIN98SE - then upgraded to XP -
thinking perhaps that might fix it. But I really need to
be able to download some plug-ins and other things for my
work - and cannot. HELP!

I have the exact same problem with downloading .exe's. I went into regedit, and looked into the extentions, but there was no .exe key. I can't even download the Internet Explorer 6 service pack. Also, I have IE6 and I'm using XP.
