Can't Download Other Programs

This problem just started a few days ago and I don't know why.
Whenever I go to a website to download a program, when I try to link
to the download page all I get is a small square in the upper left
corner of the screen. Inside the square are a smaller red square, a
green circle and a blue triangle. I even tried an alternate browser
and got the same result. My wife's computer has no such problem, so I
guess my settings might have to be adjusted --- but I don't know which
ones. Any help out there?

Here's the fix, courtesy of Alan Edwards, MVP:

If it is only .exe files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.
Netscape-Style Plug-ins Do Not Work After Upgrading Internet Explorer
[Q303401]
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q303/4/01.asp

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
(QuickTime by the looks of it and if so, I believe they have a fix)
The key does not normally exist.
