Can't download mp3 or mpg files

Hello,
I can't download mp3 or mpg files from websites using
Internet Explorer 6 or Netscape 4.6; what happens is that
the download window opens and looks like it's about to
start downloading but then sticks there and hangs. i can
download files OK via Kazaa. I am normally running Zone
Alert but I've switched this off and the problem is still
there. Any ideas?
Thanks.

Actually, the problem is I can't download any type of file.
Also, I find I often have to press the refresh button to
get the browser to completely display a website. I don't
have either of these problems using IE6 at work.

First eliminate any scumware.
See

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.
