Can't download .exe files in Internet Explorer (no firewall)...

Hi,

I have Windows XP Pro (SP1) and Internet Explorer 6 (SP1). When using IE,
I'm unable to download any ".exe" file from any site... Well what actually
happens is:
- The file is actually downloaded and placed in the Temporary Internet Files
Folder but I don't have any dialog box showing up asking to save the file or
execute the file and the file isn't executed once it is downloaded.

I tried changing the ".exe" File Type association in the folder options of
Windows Explorer (like someone mentionned elsewhere) but it didn't work... I
tried resetting IE's options at a couple of places ( in: (Tools... Internet
Options... Programs... Reset Web Settings) and in: ((Tools... Internet
Options... Advanced... Restore Defaults) )... Nothing worked yet...

Any help would be appreciated!!

Thank you!!!

Yann

Turn on a firewall immediately !!!
When you click to save the exe file, choose save and pick a folder(like
desktop) so you can easily find the file after it is downloaded. Then goto
the folder and click the file to install it.

Thanks for the info, but my problem is that I don't get any dialog box
asking me to pick a folder like on my other PC (just like if someone clicked
on "don't ask me again"). Also, if I right click on a .exe file link in IE,
the "Save As.." item is disabled!!! Is their some sort of policy in XP that
could disable the downloading of dangerous files in IE??? I'm trying with
the main administrator user, so I can't see why that feature would be
disabled.
Turn on a firewall immediately !!!
I will probably install a firewall later, but not for now... I use alot
Windows 2000 but not very familliar with XP... I saw their was a built in
firewall in Windows XP Pro... Will that do the job?? I will probably get a
router to share the internet connection between many PCs... So I'll check to
get one with an integrated firewall or something...

I think there is a fix for the problem of it not asking you were to save on
this page somewhere:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp.htm

If your on the internet with no firewall you open yourself up to one of the
many exploits that a firewall could stop, like messenger service spam,
viruses, trojans, and hackers. You should *always* use a firewall when on
the internet.

Thanks purplehaz!!!

I just "clicked" when I made a search on the site you sent me
(http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp.htm). Earlier, I enabled the content
advisor and that's maybe what's blocking the .exe files... I found the
following document that documents this:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q176316

I'll try it tonight... Thanks alot for your feedback!!!

You're welcome.

Well, I tried disabling the content advisor and it did not work... FYI: I
had this problem before upgrading from Windows ME to Windows XP...

Anyone else have any idea????

Thanks!

Yann

I found the problem!!!! Wooooohoooooo!!!!!

There was a plugin in IE that was associated with the .exe files!!!! Removed
the registry key and everything works normally now!!!

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe
