Can't delete registry key

R

Randy

I have one other problem and again system is XP/SP2 Pro all updates.

There is a specific key in the registry that I can not delete.

I have Adobe Premiere Elements -- It was there for awhile before I tried to
use it. When I tried it said it was needed to be reinstalled. But to
re-install you have to un-install. It would not completely uninstall because
a key in the registry could not be deleted.

The Key; HKLM \ SOFTWARE \ Adobe \ Premiere Elements \ 1.0 \ DefaultPreset\
(Default) REG_SZ (value not set)

The error;: Cannot delete the DefaultPreset: Error while deleting key.

So I am now in the position that I can not uninstall the program or install
it or use it in any way. Is there any program that can blast that key away?

This problem has been present for a long time... so all copies of the
registry have the same problem.

Thanks

Are you getting that error from the uninstaller or from regedit? are
you uninstalling from add/remove progs or from the install disc of the
program?

Thanks to all you your responses but that is not the problem. --

I am the adminstrator I have full control permissions.

The software is a full version which I purchased.

Any more ideas?

If the un-install was not completely successful could it be that Elements
has a process or service that starts when you boot and this is still running
and dependent on this key being present?

It does matter if you are the king of Siam. You have to have the proper
permissions.

To take ownership of a registry key
1. Open Registry Editor
2. Click the key you want to take ownership of.
3. On the Edit menu, click Permissions.
4. Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.
5. Under Change owner to, click the new owner, and then click OK.

To grant Full Control of a registry key
1. Open Registry Editor
2. Click the key to which you want to grant Full Control.
3. On the Edit menu, click Permissions.
4. Under Group or user names, click the user to whom you want to grant Full
Control of your registry key.
5. Under Permissions for name, where name represents the name of the user to
whom you are granting Full Control of the key, select the Allow check box
for Full Control.

Do you have Zone Alarm 6.5 installed?
If so, disconnect from the Internet and uninstall Zone Alarm. Turn on the
Windows firewall and make your changes. Then you can reinstall ZA if you
want to.

I've never tried it but if you can boot to Safe Mode and use the registry
editor, see if you can delete the key.

You were right -- I did not have permissions for that particular key,
changed permissions. Deleted key.

Thanks for the help.
