Can't delete midi from ppt.

Ben van Riemsdijk

Hi,

I've read some discussions on midi files and ppt but none of them had
an answer to my problem:
I have a presentation which was made by someone who is not available
any more. It was made with PP 97. When I open the file on my laptop,
which has pp97 on WinNT installed, it plays 3 different midi files
during the slide show. I can't find these files anywhere on the
laptop. I have searched for rmi and mid but no result. They are also
not included on the cd-rom, which holds only one file: the
presentation. I checked for hidden files but no luck either.

Opening the ppt on WinXP with PP XP results in a presentation without
the anoying midi.

Since you state in several posts that midi is always linked and not
embedded, I thought that maybe WinNT or pp97 have these midi files and
XP does not. But this doesn't seem to be the case since I can't even
find the files.

There's also no speaker icon anywhere. You gave someone a tip to look
for such an icon somewhere near the slides, maybe the author dragged
it out of the window. But, when I insert a new midi file and try to
drag the icon out of the window, scrollbars appear and the slide is
not centered anymore. Furthermore, in the screen "custom animations",
an extra media-item appear clearly visible. I can't find any
multi-media item in the presentation anywhere.

What can be the problem? I really need to get rid of the midi sound.

Kind regards,

Ben

Ben,

I wonder if the midi file is hyperlinked to an object, although that would
maybe make it hard to play. If you get stuck, please send me a single
offending slide by email and I can have a look. Long as it is not tooo big
<g>. The truth is out there somewhere.

How do you know that they are midi files and that there are three of them?

I'm replying on behalf of Ben.
When the midi volume on the computer is turned down, the musis stops.
There are 3 different songs, they all start with a different slide. When the
slide with the beginning of the song is removed everything is silent untill
another slide with sound is shown.
There is no speaker icon visible on any slides and no multi media components
are listed as part of the presentation.
Could it be that this was made in another office suite (i.e. Open Office)
and later converted to PPT format?

Thanks for your time!

If you save the presentation as HTML, the midi files should show up as
separate files. You can then delete the midi files from the HTML folder and
open the HTML in PowerPoint. Re-save as a PowerPoint file and the mystery
files should be gone.

I suspect that you have WAV files attached to slide transitions. That would
explain why you can't see them as linked files or as animated media objects,
nor can you see an icon. Open PowerPoint and open the presentation. Select
the slide that plays with sound. Go to Slide Show > Slide Transition and
see whether there is a sound file attached. If so, it is a WAV and it is
embedded in the presentation file, not linked.

Hello Ben,

It's possible that the author of the presentation has added background sound
to the presentation using the Custom Soundtrack feature in PowerPoint
(installed from the ValuPack folder).

This would explain why you are unable to locate any MIDI files since this
feature does not actually generate any MIDI files but simply generates sets
of MIDI instructions on the fly during slide show.

If you haven't installed the feature you will not be able to access the
dialog which allows you to add/remove/change these sounds from the
presentation. Once you install the feature from the ValuPack folder on your
PowerPoint/Office 97 CD you will get a new command on the Slide Show menu
that will allow you to remove the sounds from the presentation.

Hi John,

thanks for your reply. This _must_ be it, since your description perfectly
matches my problem.

I will try your suggestion at once!

Kind regards,

Ben
