Can't delete icons/files from desktop without manual "refresh"

Hi, all,
Just reinstalled XP on wife's laptop; created two users, her and "family".
She's the administrator.
Only on her desktop, if I drag and drop a file, shortcut, icon, etc. to the
desktop or right-click it and then delete it, it/they will not disappear
until I right click out in the field of the desktop and hit "refresh".
The "family" desktop works like I'm accustomed to, that is, the darn thing
just deletes when you delete it.
Is there some toggle somewhere I don't know about, or is this some sort of
alternative to the "are you sure you want to delete this (...)?" box?

I google on this problem and find someone saying that tweaking a registry
entry can solve this problem. I try it on my PC but it doesn't change any
Refresh mode. See if it helps you.

1. Click Start - Run - type REGEDIT and press enter key.
2. Expand to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet001\Control\Update
3. On the right side pane check for an entry name call "UpdateMode".
4. If the Value is 1 then set it to 0.
5. Restart your computer and login again.

See if it helps you, let us know!

There is plenty of evidence to suggest that "RajKohli"

If that tweak is relevant (which I haven't checked) then you'd need to make
the change for your current control set (which may not be Control Set 001),
so it would apply to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Update

rather than the one you mentioned.

Well, I gave it a try. Didn't change anything. BTW, what I meant to say was
if I drag and drop a desktop icon to the waste basket, or right click it, or
a file or folder or whatever, it simply does nothing. I have to right click
out in the field of the desktop, hit "refresh", and bingo, it works. Also,
the other "registered" user, family, does not have this problem.

Since it appears to be account specific, the quickest solution (rather than
waiting for a response in here which might take forever) might be to create
a new account and when you've fully copied over your old files /
applications then delete the old account.
