can't delete files any more !!

I've been using Win XP SP2 for about 6 months, everything fine.

Today a strange problem started. If I try to delete a file or folder,
in Windows Explorer or from an application, I get this error message:

Failed assertion in common.cpp at line 168
Error loading signature XML from 'sigs.xml'

Then, all desktop icons and the taskbar disappear. All I can to is
hardware reset.

I did a file search and I don't have either of those files on my
computer.

It is the same if I am in the menus and right-click on a menu item and
choose delete.

It is the same if I right-click in a desktop icon - don't get as far as
choosing Delete or anything else, just the right-click.

AVG, Ad-Aware, and Spybot turn up nothing.

Help!!!

OK, I went to regedit and found some entries for an app I had
uninstalled, and removed those entries. That fixed it as far as being
able to remove menu entries while in the menu system, by right-click
and choosing Delete.

But I still have the same problem when trying to delete a file, and
also when right-click on a desktop icon.

Ok, I went back to regedit, search for the app name of the one I had
removed, and found a few more entries to delete. Now all is fine!!
thanks
