Can't delete empty file folders

I tried to delete a bunch of empty .tmp file folders, however I keep getting this error message: (located them thru search)

Cannot delete file: Cannot red from the source file or disk.

The file folders were in this directory: Program files/Common Files/Symantec Shared/ Virus Def

I found the directory, then went to the virus def folder. None of the empty .tmp folders were in the Virus Def folder.

Any suggestions as to why I'm unable to delete these empty folders?

Those files are virus definitions that Norton's Anti-virus uses to screen/scan
your PC. They are changed each time you update your anti-virus program.
Do not delete them. Although they are temporary, you'll need them to keep
an updated application.

The subject line says it all. Also noteworthy is that CPU usage goes up to
about 50% after I try to select "Search". The only way to bring everything
back to normal is to reboot my entire machine!

I tried doing a System Restore before I had this problem, and that didn't
work, either. I have McAfee virus scanner on my computer, and it's always
on. In short, I'm at a complete loss right now.

For the record, when I do a searcher from an Explorer WINDOW, that works
fine. It's only when I use the one from the "Start" menu that it causes
complete catastrophe. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.
