Can't delete Desktop Icons

I have many icons on my desktop that don't work and I want to delete
them but can't. I get a message that reads:
"Can't delete shortcut to XXXXXXX Access is denied.
Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and
that the file is not currently in use."

What is the problem? How can I delete the Icons (shortcuts) from my
desktop?

Have you tried to do it in Safe Mode?

Are the shortcuts from a known program or some parasites?

Get AdAware and SpyBot and run them both. Keep them up to date.
