Can't delete desktop Icon

Steve

Hi there,

I have a folder Icon (it is shown as a shortcut i.e. has the little
shortcut arrow in left hand corner) on my desktop which is causing a
problem.
It says (probably irrelevant) "Sortcut to fruit!, which is a PDA
program I think I installed.

If I double left click on the icon the computer freezez and need a
re-boot (i.e. press the reset button).

If I right click on it (to see properties etc.) the same thing happens
and the only way to get out of the freeze is the reset button again !

I have even tried going into "Safe Mode" but exactly the same thing
happens on both left & right clicks of the mouse !

How can I get rid of this icon ?

HELP .. please !

Thanks in advance,

Steve

If you didn't uninstall the Application referring or linking to this Icon
and the process is running in the background it will prevent you from
Deleting it in either safe mode or normal mode, so if you will not use the
App go to Add/Remove programs and remove the application and this should
clean up after it and remove the icon, if it will clean up then try the
following:
Open a run command and type in:
DEL /a /f "\\?\c:\Documents and Settings\Desktop\Fruit.jpg" <= this an
example you will need to know the path of this icon on your computer.
The Example will be like this:
DEL /a /f "\\?\path\FileName" .

"How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP":

If still no joy try this tool:
http://www.ccleaner.com

You need to scan for malwares on your computer to make sure all clean and
run Disk cleanUp to clear the debris:
Scan for malwares from here:

Hi Ron,

Used this program ... dragged the shortcut into the window of the
program as it tells you to ... re-booted .... GONE !

By the way, when I dragged the folder into the box, it also gave me
the path of the program ! (Excellent)

I remember now (I installed this program 6 weeks + ago, and forgot
what it was) it is a Fruit Machine program for my (old) Psion netBook,
and I have no idea why it created a desktop shortcut, this has NEVER
happened with any other Psion programs !

Anyway, problem solved, and I really appreciate your help Ron !

Many Thanks,

Steve

Hi nass,

Thanks for your help, I managed to uninstall it ... please see the
reply I made to Ron (above).

The program wasn't uninstalled, and seems to have been a rogue
shortcut for some reason from a Psion program.... very strange.

I will keep Ron's and your answer on file in any case for future
reference.

Many Thanks for your help anyway, it is appreciated !

Steve
