I'm using Freepops to connect to various email servers. It will generate a
text file error log is something goes wrong. I open the text file in
Notepad and clear it out so new error information isn't appended. When I
try to save the file, I get this message:

Cannot create the c:\program files\freepops\stderr.txt file.
Make sure that the path and filename are correct.

I click ok and the Windows Save As dialog box opens. Now I click save and
it ask me if I want to replace the file. I click yes and it saves. The
file is not set to read only. Why does this happen?

Thanks,
Brett

Have you tried opening the .txt file whilst Freepops is not running? does it
have the same errors?

Most programmers are good at writing code, but not at designing the user
interface to be comfortable and informative to anyone but another geek, a
robot, or a toaster. So, error messages are sometimes completely
uninformative to the user, unless you are a geek, robot or toaster.

My guess: Make sure you've got Freepops shut off when you try and work with
its log file. In most cases, software places a lock on the files it creates
and you can't modify it unless the program is shut down, or the program
explicitly allows sharing the file with other programs or users.

If my guess is correct, the error message you SHOULD'VE seen would say "This
file is in use by another program and cannot be modified until that program
has been shut down".
