I have a Windows 98 computer running Office 2000 Small Business Edition.
Yesterday, mysteriously, it began misbehaving. When clicking on "New" to
create a new mail message, you get an hour glass and then a "not
responding." When clicking on other shortcuts other weird things happen,
i.e. when you click on Tasks it goes to Notes, when you click on Calendar it
crashes, when you click on Contacts, it goes to calendar.

We have uninstalled Office and gone through the KB article 252566 to
manually remove leftover files, but when we reinstall, the same thing
happens. I'd like to avoid formatting the machine if possible.

Any ideas?

This usually is a damaged PST file or a damaged profile. You have a program
called scanpst in c:\program files\common files\system\mapi\ (and some
levels deeper dependend of Outlook and Windows version).

Run Scanpst and open your Outlook database (PST-File) with it, it should
repair errors in your file.

If the error persists, you may create a new PST file and export all data
with CopyPST (www.olfolders.de/download/ENG/CopyPST.zip) then use the new
file. CopyPST tries to copy all elements which are still readable into a new
file and creates a report of all elements which are unreadable. You should
run it while Outlook is started and both files are opened. Give the new file
a different display name, so that on choosing the source/target you see
different names. If you are using contact links, run OLFix
(www.olfolders.de) afterwards which will correct all links. For distribution
lists, click on update so that Outlook re-assigns the recipients. If you are
done choose tools/services, set the default folder to the new folder and
close the old one.

Thanks Thomas.

We removed all .pst and .ost files and an extend.dat file. We blew away all
profiles and started from scratch. Now, the buttons in the Outlook Shortcut
bar work properly, but we still lock up Outlook when we click on the "New"
button to create a new mail message.

Any other ideas?
