Can't create Automated System Recovery Diskette

When I try and run the Automated System Recovery Wizard,
instead of just putting my basic system files on a single
floppy (like the Help says), it constantly tries to backup
my entire System State area which is 404MB of data. I
followed all the instructions but no luck. How can I
create just one floppy disk that will allow me to use the
Automated System Recovery (F2 after botting from Windows
CD) when all else fails? There aren;t enough floppies in
the world to back up all my stuff. Thanks.

You can't. The whole point of it is the system state data. The floppy is just getting some parts back so XP can be installed automatically so the SSD can be restored. Then you do a normal restore of apps and data.

That's fine but I thought the whole point was to put just
enough system files on the floppy to allow the boot
process to continue. No matter what I do, it doesn't
create just one floppy with system files - it requires
that I continuously feed it more floppies as if it's doing
a shadow backup of my entire system. Maybe I
misunderstand what this floppy is supposed to have on it.
I realize it isn't as simple as the old Windows 98 Startup
diskette but this is frustrating because the instructions
make you believe it will create only one floppy with
system files. As Bob Seger says, "working on mysteries
without any clues."

Any more help on this issue you can give me? Thanks very
much.

That's not how ASR works. It bakes up the registry and other system
files and creates an ASR floppy to access this backup. Repeat, it
doesn't work as you think it does. ASR is a cludgy solution at best.
Better to use a disk imaging program.
