Can't copy "software" hive

My system is, in a word, f'd up (guess that's two). I deleted some unused,
unwanted files (msn, a poker demo, etc) to free up some space but haven't
been able to boot since. Anyway, I'm trying to recover my corrupted registry,
which I'm hoping is the problem. I'm trying to copy the 5 hives (system,
software, sam, security, default) to repair them. I've been able to copy all
except "software". I get a message, "The file could not be copied".

Help, please....

I have the same problem following a power cut (even with a power surge
protector on the system). Software refuses to copy. Did you manage to
overcome it? I will be very grateful for advice about what to do, I
have some important stuff on the disk I need to access urgently. Thanks
for any help.
