Can't copy into the "Windows" folder

M

Martin

I have a new Windows XP computer. It will NOT allow me to copy a file
into the Windows folder! (or any sub-folders). I am the only user - I
am an administrator. Copying to/from other folders seems to work OK.

I have tried setting drive C as "shared". When I do, I can copy files
both TO and FROM various folders but NOT the Windows folder (I get an
"Access Denied" error). Whether driver C is shared or not, I cannot
copy anything into the Windows folder. When trying to copy something
into the Windows folder (from another folder on the same drive), the
"Paste" option on the right-click menu is disabled.

What is preventing me from doing this?

Help?

Hi,

You should not copy anything to the Windows folder outside of files required
to install and run software. As to your "access denied" problem, you need to
take ownership to resolve it. Right-click the folder, select properties. Go
to the security tab and click advanced. You can take control of the folders
on the owner tab. For the security tab to appear in a WinXP Pro system, you
must disable simple file sharing in the control panel/folder options/view
tab. For a WinXP Home system, you must restart in safe mode and logon as
administrator. More details here:
