Error Copying File or Folder

Recently, when my colleague on her PC tries to copy/open SOME files that
reside on my PC, she gets the message:

--------------------------------------------------------------

== Error Copying File or Folder ==

Cannot copy [filename]: Access is denied.

Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not
currently in use.

--------------------------------------------------------------

This has only started happening recently. Here's the info I can give.
Hopefully there's some clues in here.

* SOME files will copy/open/read and others will not.
* This problem is not discriminatory to file type or folder location. Eg:
from one particular folder, one PDF will copy but another will not. One GIF
file will copy, but another will not. The files themselves do not have any
special attributes set.
* This hasn't been a problem until recently.
* We both have Windows XP SP3.
* User accounts and/or sharing hasn't been changed. The C drive on my
machine has "Share this folder on the network" and "Allow netowork users to
change my files" ticked.
* I have tried copying files while both the Windows Firewall (the only one I
have) and also my CA Anti-virus program are disabled.
* In Internet Explorer options, under the Security tab > Local Intranet >
Sites, "Automatically detect intranet network" has been unticked with every
combination of options, and also tried copying files with "Automatically
detect intranet network" ticked.
* When installing Windows XP SP3, I kept getting an "access is denied" error
of sorts. I went through the steps in the following KB article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377
The SP3 install wouldn't work until I ran through this step of that KB
article titled "Method 1: Reset the registry and the file permissions".
* When I look at the files on my machine locally, they open without issue.
* I can copy the files FROM my PC TO my colleagues PC.

If I think of anything else I will add it to this post.

If anyone has any ideas/suggestions that could help me fix this, it would be
very handy!

You need to examine the permissions on the files under the Security tab
(right-click the file) and perhaps reset them. One of the quirks of
filesystem permissions is that sometimes they get carried-over when files are
copied form elesewhere, sometimes they don't.

This also depends (in a very complex and confusing way) on whether you are
using Simple File Sharing, or not. This is best turned off.

Hi Anteus,

Thanks for the reply!

The files themselves had always resided on the system (my system). My
colleague only ever wants to copy the occasional file, work on it, then put
it back on my machine.

It was very strange because this had never been a problem up until now -
that is - without change, we started experiencing these issues.

I turned off Simple File Sharing and then set Full Permission for Everyone.

That did the trick. Many thanks!!!
