Can't connect to the internet when connected via VPN

I have Windows XP Pro on my home desktop and am using a 2Wire wireless
router. I have set up a VPN so I can work on files using my laptop at other
locations in the house. I am able to share my internet connection on the
laptop until I make the VPN connection. Once the VPN connection is made I
can no longer access the internet.

Well, beyond the fact your using a VPN to access files on other PCs on your
local network?

Perhaps this article will help...Presuming of course that your using the MS
built-in PPTP server and client...

So why are you using a VPN to access shares over your local home LAN?

I can't see my desktop on the network unless I'm connected via VPN. I must
have it configured incorrectly. I get the following error- "Home Computer is
not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource.
Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access
permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently
available."

Also, what would be the best way to set this up? My wife and I are users on
my home desktop computer. We both have laptops and need to access the home
computer when we are away from home. The programs we access the most from
the road are Outlook and Goldmine. Is VPN the best way or can you suggest a
better way?
