Can't connect to internet

I installed the two latest critical updates for win xppro and now can't
connect to the internet.. tried all the wizards and everything looks
normal.. can't even ping my router. I tried the LSP-FIX program and these
are the three files that are listed... do they mean anything, should there
be more than 3??

mswsock.dll
winrnr.dll
rsvpsp.dll

This problem started with not being able to get to certain web sites after
installing SP2. I have been doing everything suggested in several
newsgroups to no avail. When I saw the updates, I was hoping they would fix
this. I also saw a download that microsoft had on its web KB884020 which
seemed taylor made for my problem and installed that today with no results
but that may be because I installed the latest updates prior to this fix. I
don't have much hair to pull but I am doing it anyway.. hope someone can
assist me...
