Can't connect to 'hidden' wireless networks

I can't connect to a wireless network when the SSID is
not broadcast. The built in wireless works fine on
wireless connections that can be scanned and appear in
the "Available Networks" window.
If I add a new preferred network manually and enter the
SSID of the hidden network it will not connect.
I am running XP Home Service Pack 1 with all of the
current updates.
