can't connect, send, or receive

I'm trying to set up either or both Outlook 2002 or Windows Mail on my new
vista machine. I have turned off every possible security level, contacted my
service provided, search the discussion boards...

These are the errors
Outlook 2002

Task 'Telus - Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x80042108) : 'Outlook
is unable to connect to your incoming (POP3) e-mail server. If you continue
to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet
service provider (ISP).'

Mail
The host 'pop3.telus.net' could not be found. Please verify that you have
entered the server name correctly.
Account: 'pop3.telus.net', Server: 'pop3.telus.net', Protocol: POP3, Port:
110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

According to my provdier the server for both pop3 and smtp are correct
I'm using the eProtect from Telus and the vista security software
any other suggestions? TIA
Thanks

The Windows Mail error message is correct. There is no server named
pop3.telus.net on the Internet. Change it to pop.telus.net.

By the way, notice how much more detailed the error message from
Windows Mail is compared to the one from Outlook. It is one reason
why I gave up on Outlook long ago.

I got Windows Mail to connect now - next problem I get this error message -
can't seem to diagnose through the discussion board suggestions again

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop.telus.net', Server:
'pop.telus.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error:
10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Thanks

That type of error is often caused by interference from a non-
compatible antivirus program. Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.

Hi i have the same error accept it only happens somewhere around 10:30pm and
goes on till 9am. I used to have mcafee but i unstalled it and restart the
computer. i shutdown windows defender. i haven't installed any virus
protection programs.. but idk seems strange...

please help with this i've been trying to figure this out for a week.

I use windows vista on windows mail with a telus account. everything is
correct with the incoming and outgoing server. pop.telus.net and
smtp.telus.net

to confirm this is the error: The connection to the server has failed.
Account: 'POP.telus.net', Server: 'POP.telus.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110,
Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Do not shut down Windows Defender. It is 100% compatible with WM.

Any uninstall of McAfee MUST be followed by using their debris removal tool:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=1033

If no improvement after running the McAfee removal tool, consider upgrading
to Windows Live Mail (WLM), which is more robust:
http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

If you decide to replace McAfee, we can recommend a free antivirus
program which is more compatible with Windows Mail.

We have pretty much exhausted the list of possible fixes.
It is very peculiar that the failure only occurs between certain hours.
If something is disturbing your Internet connection at night, it should affect
web browsing also, but you didn't mention that. What type of Internet
connection do you have, and has it been reliable? Is there any way of
trying a different Internet connection?

dave: yes i can log onto telus webmail with no problem and browse the
internet freely.

Gary: yes the internet works fine during those hours when windows mail
doesn't work. strange? i know, i use telus and everything with the internet
browsing is fine. i don;t think its the internet i believe its the program
its self.... logging onto telus webmail is fine and works during those hours
when the windows mail doesn't work. why don;t i use telus webmail to send my
emails? cause i want to send large amounts of photos. telus webmail doesn't
offer that. i am only able to send 4 photos at a time and to me it takes way
to long to send the message and let alone upload the photos...

but if nothign comes to you guys mind... well then i guess i just have live
through it... or reboot the comp or something to modify the program or the
connection..

thank you for your support everyone!

if any of you find a solution please post it!!

Thank you gary for replying. yes i've dled the program and tried it.
samething with different error msg at same time (10pm-9am)

thunderbird error msg: connection to server pop.telus.net timed out

hmmm this could be telus problem then or something in my computer is
blocking?

o i did a bit of research on this error and i've used this program called
ennum? dunno how to spell it but what it does it shows what anti virus
program is running. did that and only programs that are running is windows
fire wall and windows defender. i've tried shutting down windows firewall and
still no go.

so i'm gonna try and talk to telus the 4th time and see what they can do.
but most likely not much. i might hire someone to try and fix this program...
dunno is hiring a telus tech would do any good.... anyone know a good comp
tech could fix this problem? live in Canada BC

Thank you

My bet is still on your Internet connection as the cause of the problem,
although theoretically it could be the Telus mail servers. If you want
to rule out that last possibility, try a different set of mail servers:
Get a free account with Gmail: http://gmail.com
Then, configure that account for POP access:
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=13273
Then, add that account to your Windows Mail:
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=86383

Also, if your computer is a laptop, you can take it somewhere else
and try a Wi-Fi hotspot for connectivity. That would prove or disprove
your Internet connection being the cause for your trouble.
