Can't connect Laptop to Internet - Help!

Neal

Hi,
I am US military overseas in Naples Italy. I have a DSL
subscribtion to the local ISP. To connect I am using a
combination ADSL modem and wireless LAN router
(specifically a Siemens ADSL Santis 50).

OK - I can connect my desktop through its NIC to the
router and onto the internet with no problems (other than
an intermittent signal that can't be helped - welcome to
Italia!) HOWEVER - when I try the same thing with my
laptop computer, I might get a minute or two of
connection to the internet and then it locks up. The
laptop has both wireless lan capability and NIC card and
this effect occurs when either method of connection is
used. If my deesktop is on at the time, it no longer can
use the internet either. But, if I log off, the
connection is once again available. Any ideas?

It sounds like you may have selected 'this computer connects to the internet
through another computer' option when you ran the Network Setup Wizard.

Try running the wizard on both the systems again - being very careful of the
selection of options.

Also, I get a message that there is no response from the
DNS server or Default Gateway on my laptop from the prop.
software that is installed. Forgot to mention that the
first time around.

Neal,

I could think of three possible causes (out of probably quite a
few more).

1.

2. http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm#Winsock_corruption

3. Bad third party configuration software for any network
adapter, particularly for the wireless adapter. Try uninstalling
the stuff.
