Can't close archive.pst

I'm using Outlook 2003 and XP SP3. To cut a long story short, I've something
screwed up and I now can't close my archive.pst folder (or delete it) from
the Personal Folders pane, I just get this error: The operation failed. An
object could not be found. I've got up-to-date backup copies of my
outlook.pst file and a valid/correct copy of archive.pst. I've followed
Vince Avarello's postings/advice about renaming the files and I've tried the
CodeTwo freeware to remove any 'ghosts' but it just reports there aren't any.
I'm reluctant to fiddle with the registry editor but I'm also dreading having
to create a new profile, which is the only other advice I can find. I've got
10 email accounts and a long list of custom Outlook categories, all of which
will be lost. Any other solutions would be VERY welcome! Many thanks in
advance...

With outlook closed, if you use the Mail Applet in the control panel, in the
data section is the Archive shown?
And if you run scanpst.exe on the archive are any errors corrected?
