Can't change themes

When ever I attempt to change my computer's themes it freezes. . . big time.

I go to Appearance in the Display Properties and there I'm trying to select
Windows XP style.
Currently it's on Classic style.

After this I hit apply and that's when the Display box turns white and the
computer completely freezes. I can't even Ctrl-Alt-Delete. It doesn't
respond to any keyboarding the only thing I can do is to move the mouse
around the desktop. Can't click anything with it, certainly not the star
button.
Then I have to hard boot it.
