Documents and Settings/All Users/Documents made itself read only and I
can't install new software

I tried: properties and unchecking the box, using the ATTRIB command,
tried doing both the above in safe mode

Problem is with my boss' machine (The Dean).
I'd hate to have to backup everything and rebuild his pc

Any suggestions ? Thanks

Windows ignores the "Read-only" attribute for folders. Did
you check the NTFS settings for this folder? What are they?
And what exactly is the message you see when trying to
install software? Which account are you logged on under?

Thanks for the response.

I log in as local administrator. File system is probably FAT 32, it's running
IBM preloaded XP.

Please advise.

It's NTFS. It just occurred to me to run a chkdsk. I'm a little rusty.

Thanks

Please try to answser all four questions I asked in my
first reply:
- Did you check the NTFS settings for this folder?
- What are they?
- What exactly is the message you see when trying to
install new software?
- Which account are you logged on under?
