can't change customised folder icon back to default XP folder icon

Hi,

My brother installed some windows customisation software which enabled him
to use some windows xp themes. Through this software he applied a 'Vista'
looking theme, which worked fine etc<but wasn't perfect.

So the theme was applied, and duirng this was on>he uninstalled the theme
program and deleted the vista theme. As the theme was in use and at the same
time it got uninstalled, all the customisation looks were removed, except the
folder icons. They didnt get removed and since then are applied as the
default folder icon. I try to change the icon through folder properties to
the default xp folder icon but it won't change.

I went into safe mode, and in this mode the folder icons are default xp
ones. Which is good, but when i go back to normal startup, it still has the
custom folder icon in use.

Please help, i would like to change back to the default xp folder icon.
Help!!

Do you have any registry entries under the following key?:

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell
Icons"

Click Start | Run | Type: regedit.exe | Click OK
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons]
Right side, you can delete all the items (values) but if you want to restore the
folders icon only, then delete the value named 3 (for closed folder) and 4 (open
folder) from right side.

I have tried this now, deleted the values 3 and 4, and nothing happened. I
deleted all the others values except '(Deafault)', but no luck.

I notcied that when i try to chnage the customised folder icon to the
deafult>throught properties, it shows the default windows folder icon, when i
select this and chnage it, it changes it back to the customised folder icon.

OK, delete all the values from there then go to :
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\DefaultIcon
Right side, set Default to :
%SystemRoot%\System32\shell32.dll,3

Go to :
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\DefaultIcon
Right side, set Default to :
%SystemRoot%\System32\shell32.dll,3

Then REBOOT

I have went to both locations to change the defaults to, i found that the 2
defaults already had these same values. I opcied and pasted these anyway to
both defaults and restarted the pc. Unfortunately it's still the same.
