Can't capture from DV Camera via FireWire Error when starting the device.

Hello, I have a 5 months old top-of-the-line Dell computer. It came
with Media Center XP2 installed already and with an Audigy sound card
that has a firewire port built in.

I was able to capture DV video from my Panasonic PV-GS250 camcorder
with no problems up till recently. I even created a Xmas 05 DVD from
my DV tapes. However, right after this, my computer stopped
recognizing my video camera anymore. I used Studio 9 plus to capture my
video and everything was perfect. Now, there's nothing I can do to fix
this problem.

I've already changed FireWire cables, and it did not work, I bought a
new firewire card, installed it and it has no conflicts whatsoever in
the Device Manager, just like the other firewire adapter, but still did
not work. I removed both cards and reinstall them and still, no
problems in device manager, but the camera still does not get
recognized. I have disabled the Firewall from these adapters, but it
did not help.

When I try to use Movie Maker to capture my video, I get this error:
The video device cannot be used at this time because there has been an
error when starting the device.

The only thing that's seems to be obvious is that the firewire port in
my camera is the one messed up. By the way, I do have a tape in it, I
placed it in VCR mode, I have connected the firewire cable first before
turning it on, I have left the camera on with the firewire cable
connected and restarted my computer hoping that it would recognize it,
but still, it does not work.

The only thing I haven't tried is to replace my system files
(reinstall Windows) but I don't want to do that unless I have no
choice.

If anyone has any idea on how to fix this issue, please let me know.

Thanks!

JR

One more thing, my Panasonic camera does have an USB port and when I
connect the camera using this USB port, I do get it recognized in my
computer. I don't want to use this connection though because the
quality with Firewire is much better.

I agree with your assessment that the IEEE port on the camera is probably
bad. I would go to the manufacturers website.

Also, do you have a friend with a computer? Ask to use it and see if you
can capture your movie in it. If you can then you know it is 'computer'
related and not your hardware or the cable. Good lucks!
