Can't Burn CD/DVD's after re-installing XP

Alan

I have reading and writing problems with my Sony DVD-RW-DW-23A Drive. It was
suggested (probably wrongly), that I should re-install XP. I did have many
traumas and the Drive was even worse. I downloaded some K-Lite codecs and
filters, which did improve reading, but I now find that the Drive will not
write. It sometimes thinks a DVD is full or not in place. I have used Windows
XP to try to burn discs and deliberately have not loaded Roxio or Pinnacle.
I do not know whether I still have missing drivers or if XP is corrupted.

Could you please help?

Alan

Reinstalling XP was not the correct fix. Drivers are not the issue. It is
possible that either the drive is dirty so you could try cleaning it with an
optical drive cleaner, the drive could be damaged which means you need to
replace it or the drive's IDE ribbon cable needs to be replaced.

Personally I'd look at replacing the drive. The lifespan of an optical is
generally short especially if you do a lot of burning with it.

Xandros is probably correct in his assumption only thing I can think of is
are you using the software which came with the drive itself. If not try using
that rather than any other software, having said that, reading is not
affected by the manufacturers software your drive is probably faulty/dirty if
it's not reading. Once again Xandros is probably correct.

XP does not write to a DVD. You need software such as Nero or
EasyCDCreator. In all likelihood, the original installation provided this
software, but you did not include it in your reinstall.

Good catch!

Like Jim says XP cannot write to DVD media so you need third party software
in place to do that. If you had both Nero and Roxio installed at the same
time that too could be a problem. Try reinstalling either Nero or Roxio but
not both and see if you can get the drive to accept DVD media to write to.

Thank you for your reply. I will get an optical drive cleaner when I can, and will probably fit another drive. I am still puzzled because after installing the K-Lite drivers I can read pretty well most CD/DVD’s so could I do this if the drive were dirty, also I could write to discs before re-installing XP. That is why I thought I was still lacking drivers for writing.
Maybe I should say precisely what I have done: I did not install Roxio or
Pinnacle because I did not want to complicate things. I was not accurate when
I mentioned DVD’s because I did understand that windows XP can only write to
CD’s. If I put a CD into the drive, and then select a file or photo to send
to the drive, then click `Write these files to a CD’, the wizard goes through
motion of writing (giving the time to finish). However it does not actually
write anything. Also it does not always recognise that a CD is in the drive.
I hope this makes my problem clearer. Alan

I did not make myself entirely clear. I hope I have all the drivers for my
drive. I can read most discs and am only trying to write to CD's with just
windows XP native software, but can not manage this.

Thank you. My question was not put very clearly, I deliberately did not load Pinnacle or Roxio, and am trying to write to CD's with native Windows XP software

Xandros, I sent the following some while ago, but I am not sure if I did it
correctly as I have not had a reply, and would really like one.
