Cant browse the web

Paul Mazaika

I have a Windows XP home system that suddenly stopped allowing me to browse
the web. I can connect through my ISP, I can ping IP addresses that are on
line. But I cant browse with IE, and Nortons cant connect to its live
update server either.
I tried typing in the IP address of a know working server (checked it on
another machine) and it still returns a "Page cannot be displayed" error.
So its not a connection issue, doesnt appear to be a DNS issue, any ideas?
Thanks.

Has someone modified the connection settings in IE. For example: added a
proxy server or removed one?

Not that I can determine. There never has been a proxy server configured,
nor is there one now.
Any other ideas?

Check to see if your firewall was turned on under your network connections. If your connected to a rounter, having the XP firewall on will cause this problem.

Yeah, I had checked that, but it wasnt the problem. As it turns out, it was
some spyware crap that was the culprit. I downloaded AdAware and the latest
update on another machine and burned it to a cd...then installed and updated
it on the machine in question and BINGO...all is good. Why do people do
that?!?!? Anyway, thank you very much for your help. Nice to know there
are people out there willing to give us a hand. Thanks again.

I can browse some web pages, and not others. Sites like paypal, windows update, and intellisync, which I guess use https, say that they can't detect network settings and would I like to use a proxy server instead.

I went under my wireless advanced settings and noted that https was not checked off, so I checked it off, and no luck, these web sites still can't detect my settings. I shouldn't have to install a proxy server, this is a home network with 3 XP computers, the other 2 (one wireless, one lan) can both connect with no problem to any page, it's just this new one that won't do it. I also disabled the firewall (I connect through a WAP and hub)

Any ideas? Thanks
