Can ping google.com, can't browse to it

D

Dave

Windows XP SP3, IE7.

I can browse to any site I want (or at least to those that I've tried)
_except_ for www.google.com. If I enter an IP address, I can open the
Google home page, however. I can ping "www.google.com" (which is
getting translated to "www.l.google.com" somewhere along the line) to
my heart's content.

I have two other PC's on this home network - all connected to same
router, all talking to same ISP - neither of these is experiencing
this problem.

I had this problem a few weeks back. It lasted for a week or so and
then magically disappeared. Yesterday it returned.

If I browse to http://64.233.169.99/, that page has an iGoogle link on
it. If I try to browse using that link, I get the same error. Here
are the errors that're reported:

When browsing to Google:
Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site http://www.google.com/

When browsing to iGoogle:
Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site http://www.google.com/ig?hl=en&source=iglk

If, in the IE address bar, I insert that URL, but substitute the ip
address for the name, it still fails. After the failure, the addresss
bar shows the name, and not the ip address.

I've attempted to reconcile the network connections used on the other
PCs in the network, and they all look alike to me.

What can I do to diagnose this problem? Any possible causes that I
might investigate? This is very frustrating ...

I am going crazy trying to figure out the same issue! I can connect to my
gmail account and my account page, but when trying to access google.com or
igoogle.com I get the exact same "cannot open" box. This was only an
occasional interruption until yesterday when it became a permanent problem.
I had google as my homepage and never had any access problems until
recently...I'm thinking of doing a system restore to go back to a point prior
to the last few automatic updates that have been done...so anyone - any
suggestions are welcome!!

Shot in the dark:

Check your 'Hosts' file, usually in:
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
Make sure there is not an entry in that table for www.google.com.

Also try flushing the DNS cache. From command prompt:
ipconfig /flushdns

After doing a bit more (OK, hours more) searching I found a different thread
re: this same issue. Many many are having this problem and it seems to be an
issue between Google and Java. If you have the google portfolio on you
google home page Windows will not accept it. If you delete that block then
you are able to log into google, etc. According to the thread I was reading
google is aware of the problem and is working on it.
Hope this helps. To find the thread I am talking about go to Microsoft
Discussion Groups Home (link in bar at top of this page Type in Google in
the search box and you will find the thread re: Ie7 cannot open; google.com

Doesn''tMatter

You are using a proxy. go to IE Advanced section and check the box for use
HTTP 1.1 for proxy connections
