Can't boot

In my PC i have 2 harddrives - one for my current system and one for
testing.

I installted vista on the test drive and after i got my configuration up an
running i used Norton Ghost to 'copy disk to disk' (the disks are different
size).

No my pc won't boot on my 'current' drive: "no boot device avaible" so i ran
repair with the Vista disk and i was told the problems where fixed and to
boot - by no :-(

Go into the BIOS and set another boot device. (first thought??)

IOW, it will look to boot from D:\

The bootloader cannot be replicated this way.

I was able to fixxx many Booting sector issues with Suse Linux GRUB
bootloader, no no no... I am NOt suggesting you need Linux, I just used the
TOOL from SUse Linux DVD, because Windows could nopt handle such serious
problems at the time.
maybe it can now, but 2 years ago I was using Suse Grub.

You need some Booting fix tool, OR you may simply restore that test drive
into booting order, loas Vista for the final time and run Settings Transfer
Wizard, save settings, DESTROY/format that test drive of course make sure
you dont lose any documents.

Then reinstall Vista on normal drive from DVD.
It's impossible to copy didsk to disk in a way you did, you eithe need to
fix booting sectors or reisnatll Vista from zero.

Boot with a live distro like Knoppix or Ubuntu. Then when booted see the issue in
the Event Viewer and see if it gives a hint

I'm avare of that its the boot manger.
Tried to repair with the windows cd and it says it fixed some problems but
it still won't boot.
I also tried to force a boot on the other harddrive via the bios - same
problem

I ran into a similar problem recently.

Disconnect the drive you don't have Vista on and run the Vista repair.

I don't know why, but the repair process will try to do repair on the drive
that does NOT have Vista on it.

Perhaps the repair process is looking for an active partition on the
primary drive, not an extended partition or secondary drive.

I can only tell you my experience...

I ran into a problem with not being able to boot up from my main hard drive
and I tried booting up with the Vista DVD. It found the problem and went
through the process of repairing. I rebooted after repair was finish, still
can't boot. After a few failed more attempts, I tried using the command
line to rebuild the BCD.

I forget the exact details, but I discovered for some reason it was creating
the BCD store on my removable USB hard drive. I disconnected it and ran
repair again and it worked fine.

I think it's the BCD and i looked into the commands but i'm not 'hardcore'
and able to do it...

Couple of observations: (^^^^^)

Partition is D:\ and the "osdevice" is C:\ and pointing there. It
wants to boot from C drive. If the file can be edited, change C:\
paths to D:\

Hi Lars, Norton Ghost has been having compatibility problem with Vista.
Next time use Acronis TI; both HDDs will boot after mirroring.

Right now you may try to disconnect the "current" drive and boot from
the "test" drive to see if it work. If it boots, mirror it to your
"current" with Acronis TI and you are done. If the "test" drive
wouldn't boot, there are not much you can do for sure but reinstall
Vista. The size different between the two HDDs is not critical as long
as they are big enough for the OS. Post back.
