Can't boot

The machine won't boot even in safe mode. After the flash
screen starts, I get a blue screen
with "kmode_exception_not_handled." This happened after
installation of zip drive installation software and
restarting. They referred me to MS.

It's windows 2K (this group?) with sp4 installed. I'm not clear about what
you mean about using a boot disk. Do you mean the w2k startup disks?

Currently I have just replaced the HD with another using W2k and the system
is working fine.

I've tried using the set of four startup disks which loaded fine. Tried
"repair" which failed again the same way on next boot up.

The exact error message is:
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
STOP 0X0000001E(0X00000005,0XEB928299,0X00000000,0X000000A8)

have you tried booting, pressing F8 and selecting 'Last Known Good Configuration?

Thanks,Mark. That seems to have done it. I've gone through the zip drive install again and it seems to work. Hope it's not this touchy all the time.

Happy to help. No, I think a good install is pretty stable. Remember backups, even if only the System State.

If you can get a configuration backup util then that help, too. I run mine (from my IBM laptop) at almost all boots and it's saved my butt a few times. Even experienced guys like me install stuff without thinking and then go, "Oh, s..t" when there's a prob. {sigh}

Keep us up-to-date.

Cheers,
