Can't boot with CD in place

Windows XP home.

I have to have a windows XP CD in the CD rom.
If I take it out, machine boots to Windows 98. Then I have to do
fixmbr and fixboot.

Any suggestions.

If you are using a dual boot between Windows 98 and Windows XP, you need to
install Win98 BEFORE XP. To install XP first is to get the result you have
now. Do a repair install of Windows XP and see if that doesn't fix the
problem.

Dual boot is not the same thing as a logical partition on the a hard disk.
Was 98 installed before or after Windows XP?

what is boot order in BIOS?
set HD(0) as first boot.
set HD (1) as second boot
or CD as second boot
etc with 3rd boot ,if available

Windows 98 nwas installed prior to the instalaltion of Windows XP.

Did you change boot order to boot HD(0) first?
So you have dual boot? yes, it appears.
One HDD with how many partitions/drive letters?
What is in each partition/drive letter?
Is XP installed as upgrade on top of Win 98, or in separate directory or
partition/drive letter?

Can you post list of files in root directory
AND Boot.ini file? Please!!!

Win 98 is on second drive AND yuo do not have it included in Boot Order?

It finally got to work.

I don't how it got fixed but after several attempts I finally got the
machine to boot properly.
