After reinstalling XP in DOS mode it boots now from drive D: instead of C:.
How can I make it boot from drive C:? I had to reinstall it because system
hadn't started and had written smth. like 'mistake in file hal.dll
(system32)'.

XP is booting from the C: drive

it must always boot from a primary drive...

sounds like you might have installed it on the D: drive though...
that should not hurt anything...
if you want it installed on the C: drive
then you'll have to reinstall...and specify the C: drive

I had installed it in drive C: but than it appeared that the installation
program made a new directory
windows.0 and works from it. Can't make it to install to the former
directory 'windows'.

it will not hurt anything to have it installed that way.
the only way for you to install it in C:\windows
would be to delete the C:\windows folder and reinstall...
but you might as well just leave it the way it is
