can't boot into window xp professional

Hi,

I had been having a problem of sometimes a file getting corrupted (I don't
remember which file) and then I had to reboot and it seemed like xp fixed
it. But the last time I got this error (I wish I would have written down the
name of the file it said was damaged) , the computer froze. After I turned
the computer off and then on, the computer won't boot. Basically I tried to
get in using safe mode but it gets stuck at

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System 32\Drivers\MountMgr.sys

Now I was able to get into a command prompt using the windows xp cd. I
renamed the 'mountmgr.sys' file and copied the same file from another
machine, I also copied the software and config files from the
"\windows\repair\" directory.

Unfortunately this didn't do anything, still the same problem. I imagine
maybe it's having a problem not with mountmgr.sys but with the next file it
wants to work with, but that's just a guess.

Could someone guide me as to what steps I need to take to get xp to boot up?

You will lose your updates but you should keep all your other software that
you've already isntalled and not lose any files.
