Can't boot into Safe Mode

My system is running very well on XP Pro but for some reason it cannot boot
into Safe Mode.
What happens is after hitting the F8 key, it goes to the options. I choose
Safe mode and then I get an extensive list of dll's and drivers, etc...and
then the screen just stays like that...with nothing happening but this list
of dll's and drivers on screen. I wait....and wait...and wait...but nothing.
Is there a way to restore my safe mode?? Should I try to re-install XP or
what?

Try hitting the Control key instead of F8. That works in
Windows 98
