Can't Access System Restore - Disabled by Group Policy

D

Donna Alden-Bugden

I have a problem with my system restore. I have Windows
XP Home and I am the only user. I am listed as computer
administrator. I have tried to go and disable system
restore but I can't as it is all greyed out and says it
is 'disabled by group policy'. Well, the problem is, I
don't have group policies...I have home edition. So, I do
not have the file gpedit.msc on my computer. I have read
all the help saying I have to be logged on as
administrator to access system restore and to edit group
policies, well I AM the administrator...so why can't I
access system restore. I was able to access it months ago
when I first installed Windows XP.

No, you are *an* adminstrator, not *the* administrator.

Kurt...ok...but WHO is THE Administrator...no one else uses my computer???
It doesn't help me solve the problem if I can't get administrative access on
my own home computer when I'm the only one using it.

Exactly!

There is an account called "Administrator." Try logging on to that
account.

The only way that I can access the Administrator account is in safe
mode...and I log on and I still see System Restore greyed out and saying
disabled by group policy. How could group policies be made on Home
Edition...that is only in Pro version.

There must be more people who have this problem as I have seen it posted all
over the web...but unfortunately, there have never been any replies to
people's requests. I don't even see any help on Microsoft and when I try to
e-mail them for help, they say my product is an OEM product and I need to
contact the manufacturer of my computer....and that is so funny because they
know nothing about Windows XP. They direct me back to Microsoft for paid
support. Which means my computer, which is only a few months old, has no
support except for the kind efforts of others on the net.
Thanks
Donna

Hi Donna,

Open Registry Editor and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore
(Backup the registry key using the File, Export option)

In the right-pane, delete the value "DisableConfig".

Close Registry Editor

Close and re-open the System Restore properties page.

Thank you SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much. People have been telling me to modify it
from '0' to '1' but that wasn't working. But deleting it entirely worked
miraculously. Thank you again. I also deleted the DisableSR portion and now
I can access the little square to check off disable SR and the little bar to
change my disk space usage. It is all back

Much appreciated.
